Hotsprings and home of a modern day prophetess!
This place is located in an vast extinct volcanic crater. Thousands of followers of the local medium flock here every day to pay homage to an old lady that used to perform her magic in the nearby garden house. Magic is still evident to me in the form of plentiful hot water oozing from the muddy ground.
Cherry on top: The municipality installed a free to use electric vehicle charger in the parking lot.
the hotel in the background was still under construction during our stay in the end of 2022
shallow pools with some mud buildup. Let’s say 9/10 soakability score.
Each of the pools is fed by a stream of scalding hot water. Final soaking temperature depends on how much water is allowed to enter the individual pond 45°C here.
31°C in this case
One of the water sources near the entrance of the paid baths.
Temperatures can be well above 80°C with good flow rate.
That is another spring inside the nearby spiritual complex. While it could be an excellent bath source, here it’s just channeled away to a pond where temperatures are below 30°C. Much to the pleasure of aquatic creatures such as turtles and ducks.
While the place looks pretty wild: the municipality seem to provide changing rooms rooms and a few dixi toilets free of charge.
Right next to the free outdoor pools there is a paid bath. Separate facilities for men and woman. We did not bother to give it a try. But they also sells drinks and french fries which we did enjoy. Alas, no gender separating walls at the pavilion tables.
Rupite, Bulgaria:
This one checks almost all boxes. Although development is happening around the site, locals seem to treasure these pools just as much as travelers. What also means that in a orthodox country no skinny dippin'. If you don't mind the overall mudskipper vibe: big dip!
